Vintage Swing Dance.
I use the term Vintage Swing Dancing to cover a number of dances which I teach, dance, perform and ADORE- namely Lindy Hop, Balboa, Charleston, Shag, & Solo Jazz. I find a deep sense of joy from dances of this era and the jazz music of the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s.
I hold a first place win in Balboa from All Balboa Weekend am Mix and Match and MC Shuffle, as well as multiple number of first places in Mix and Matches in Lindy Hop (The Rhythm is Jumpin, Big Red Swing, River City Messaround to name a few). I’ve also solidly placed in high level tracks, finals and won multiple 2nd, 3rd place consistently at events around the US since I started dancing in the late 1990’s.
Over the past few years competition dancing has taken a back seat to working on my teaching, dj’ing, and skill development as both a leader and follower. I also serve the community as a Balboa and Lindyhop Dj, working at events like Great Lakes Balboa, Huntsville Regional Exchange, Dayton Swing Smack Down, Big Red Swing Weekend, Souther Swing Challenge and Knoxville School of Hard Knox. When I’m not on the floor or in the DJ booth I’ve also been doing pop-up workshops at dance events where I instruct yoga or recovery stretches for dancers in 20 minute, 30 minute, and hour long increments.

Solo Teaching Bio.
Hailing from Louisville Kentucky & now Boston Emily’s versatile and expressive presence on the dance floor has gained her multiple first place wins in mix and matches at regional and national events from All Balboa Weekend to River City Messaround & The Rythmn is Jumpin. She adores to geek out about body awareness, technique, and personal expression- but above all believes that dancing and learning to dance should be fun. Her classes utilize years of compassionate, playful, and tactful teaching experience at regional and national dance events in addition to her university level teaching experience (yep, she’s a art professor IRL) and recently she received her 200 hour Yoga Teaching Certificate in Rishikesh, India! You can expect a couple fantastic ‘dad’ jokes, new and empowering ways of thinking about dance and your body for both the leader and the follower, and a clear passion & people focus from any classes you take with her.

partners in crime and balboa- Collyn and Emily are a dynamic Balboa duo hailing from Louisville and Boston with competition wins between the two of them including 1st place Mix&Match at All Balboa Weekend in 2015 and many, many, many, 1, 2, & 3rd place wins in competitions from Great Lakes Balboa escape to Music City Shuffle, Sparx, and more. Recently they’ve brought their years of dance and teaching experience together in partnership where they strive to show how both lead and follow voices can be explored and empowered in each dance. Their many years working on Balboa and body mechanics give their teaching an informed, detailed and playful twist. When they aren’t twisting, swiveling, or shuffling around the floor both are teachers, artists, writers, and creative thinkers and would love to have a laugh with you in the class room and out on the dance floor.

Emily Schuhmann’s been inspiring dancers to find their personal voice and connection with both partner and music since 2006. She loves a good mix of tunes tailored to the event and the dancers from Lindy to Balboa, Charleston, and maybe even a spice of Trad-jazz or jug. Her recent obsessions include Larry Clinton, Mary Lou Williams, and sextets or other small ensemble recordings of some of the big band favorites. Her DJ CV includes a number of events from national to regional like Great Lakes Balboa Escape, Swing IN, Dayton Smackdown, Whistle Stop, KLX, School of Hard Knox, CBus and many others. As a DJ Emily focuses on music that is playful, spirited, intelligent, and conversational. She’s been absolutely enthralled with vintage music, dance and fashion since the early 2000’s and brings that love to her song selections. You’ll find her infectious smile and love of dance coming across on the floor and infusing a spirited bounce to the music you’ll enjoy when she’s in the DJ booth!.
